Precautions During Your Visit
This Kyo-machiya, a traditional wooden townhouse, is made of wood, clay (walls) and paper (shoji screens and fusuma sliding doors). They are fragile and easily damaged if hard or sharp objects come into contact with them. Pay strict attention to your behavior to avoid such damage.
- Do not place your belongings by the shoji screens and fusuma sliding doors. Large luggage should be left at the reception, if possible.
- The tokonoma alcove is a solemn and sacred place. Do not stand on it or place anything on it.
- Do not step on the edges of tatami mats and door sills as they are easily damaged.
- Tatami mats will be damaged if the hem of your pants/skirts catches on them. Fold the hem up before entering the house if wearing long pants/skirts, etc.
- Standing or walking barefoot on the floor or tatami mats can leave footprints. Please wear socks or other indoor footwear in the house.
